Blue-Green Building Materials

Many of the materials used in waterfront construction are known for their detrimental effects on marine life. From creosote-treated piles to copper paints, the formulation of marine building materials has historically aimed to reduce growth of marine organisms, not enhance it. However, most marine species have an extremely minor, if not nonexistent effect on modern building materials and on the structural integrity of modern waterfront buildings.

Why not build with ecologically-tested materials, especially when the project’s primary medium is concrete, which is largely resistant to biofouling over the typical life cycle of new waterfront construction?
